CCWP Partnerships

~Working Together~

Through strong professional collaboration with regional educational institutions, the CCWP has developed numerous effective partnerships. Our fellows actively work to bring meaningful professional development that empowers the teachers who deliver writing instruction to our diverse student populations.

Here are just a few highlights of this ongoing, vital work.

North Monterey County Partnership

Gilroy Unified School District Partnership

Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD)

Renaissance High School

The Steinbeck Young Authors Program

 North Monterey County Partnership

CCWP and North Monterey County Middle School in Castroville, CA, continue an on-going partnership with a focus on strategic writing instruction and interventions to meet the needs of all students, with a particular focus on EL learners. A CCWP teacher leader provides on-site professional development to grades 7 and 8 teachers and works with administration and staff to develop and implement a program that will:

Assess the needs and skills of students in writing in small group meetings;

Define the purposes of reading and writing in the classroom curriculum;

Implement effective classroom writing strategies and activities that align with the CA ELA and ELD standards;

Design and integrate assessment into curriculum to improve student writing achievement;

Facilitate a cycle of inquiry to gather, analyze, and evaluate relevant data from student work and test scores in order to plan instruction;

Facilitate field testing of benchmarks in order to develop district proficiency assessments; and

Build a collaborative, sustainable professional community of teachers during the school year and a team of teacher leaders in a summer institute.

Gilroy Unified School District Parternship

CCWP and South Valley Middle School in Gilroy, CA, continue an on-going partnership with a focus on strategic writing instruction. A CCWP teacher leader provides on-site professional development to grades 6, 7, and 8 teachers and works with administration and staff to develop strategic writing strategies, based on the needs of students. The work involves analyzing student writing, continuing a cycle of inquiry approach to formative assessment and evaluation in order to embed writing-to-learn prompts and rubrics in adopted curriculum. Data is collected and reported that will inform practice and professional development in whole staff and small group meetings. A summer institute provides a venue to build a collaborative, sustainable leadership team at the site.

The Steinbeck Young Authors Program

The Steinbeck Young Authors Program is the result of a powerful collaborative alliance between 5 regional educational institutes dedicated to improving the writing of middle school students, and in particular, the needs of our English Language Learner population. These 5 partners, under the leadership of Sylvia Panetta (of the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute) are:

The CCWP

The National Steinbeck Center

Monterey County Office of Education

Hartnell College

California State University of Monterey Bay

Launched in 2003, the program more than tripled this year as over 2600 students were introduced to the pleasure and challenge of writing through a curriculum unit co-developed by CCWP fellows for John Steinbeck’s The Red Pony. It is the stated goal of the Steinbeck Young Authors Program to reach all middle school students in the county area by year five.

The SYA Program consists of three stages: a classroom component, a day-long writing event for top students, and an awards ceremony honoring the student-participants, their teachers, and the community members (including lawyers, journalists, university professors, and business professionals) who volunteered as writing coaches during the Day of Writing event.

The CCWP is honored to be an pro-active member of this formidable community alliance working to improve the writing skills of our local youth.
