Lucia Villarreal has taught grades Kinder through 8th grades for 35 years. She retired and now works part time as a K-2 Reading Specialist. She received her BA in Linguistics and Spanish in 1973, a Bilingual Specialist Credential in 1977 and her MA in Education in 2001, all from San Jose State University. She earned a National Board Certification in English as a New Language in 2002. Throughout her long teaching career she has been a teacher leader consultant in language arts projects such as the Central California Writing Project (CCWP), the California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP), and the Migrant Optimal Learning Environment (OLE) Program. She continues to be an education activist, advocating for students, parents, teachers and the community. As an English Learner and migrant student herself, she is passionate about the academic success of English learners and migrant students.
